orange - Takano Ichigo

Status: Ongoing
Genre: shoujo, romance, drama, school life, slice of life

In spring, Takamiya Naho, a sixteen years old girl received a long and detailed letter from herself ten years in the future. At first she thought it was a prank, but things actually happened according to the letter. On that same day, a new student named Naruse Kakeru got transferred to her school, as written on the letter. Kakeru hung out with Naho and her friends after school, but was absent for two weeks after that. During that time Naho finished reading her letter and found out that her future's self biggest regret is that Kakeru is no longer in this world and that she wishes that her younger self can prevent that from happening.

Characters

Takamiya Naho
The main character of this series. A sweet and kind girl, but has difficulties in voicing her thoughts and feelings out, which might have indirectly lead to Kakeru's early death. After reading the letter, she's very determined to save Kakeru this time around. She has a crush on Kakeru. In the future, she is married and has a child.

Naruse Kakeru
A transfer student from Tokyo. He's friendly and easygoing and everyone likes him. He holds secret and tremendous guilt inside for the thing that happens on his first day at school. However, he hides it from his friends as he doesn't want to make them worry about him. He likes Naho.

Suwa Hiroto
Naho's friend in the present, and Naho's husband in the future. He's liked Naho and cared a lot about her ever since school, but tried to hide it as he's aware of the things going on between Naho and Kakeru. Everyone is aware about his feelings though, except Naho (lol). His wish is for Naho to be happy.

To be honest, I'm never a fan of shoujo mangas, and I was just reading this manga since I was bored one night. Turns out it was a very bad decision, since I wasn't prepared for THE TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF FEELS. I cried so much while reading it, which is very ooc for me. This manga really gives a lot of feels, so it's better to prepare yourself before reading it.

...and it's really good too! Usually when you see the tag "shoujo, romance, drama", you can kind of picture what kind of story it will be. No, it's not your usual boy-meets-girl or scenario. It has romance, but the main thing is deeper than that, it's about regrets and wishes and saving someone's life and how difficult it is.

And now.. spoiler time: (skip if you don't want spoilers)

It turns out, everyone (Suwa and other people in Naho's group) also got a letter from their future selves, and they work together to save Kakeru. Suwa's letter has a picture of future Naho and their baby :'( Future Suwa asked his high school self to make Naho happy by sacrificing his own feelings and get her together with Kakeru :'(

What I like:
  • I usually don't like love triangles, but the love triangle between Naho, Kakeru and Suwa is original and you'll find yourself unable to ship a pair and instead just wants everyone to be happy T_T
  • I read some people criticising the decisions made by the characters but.. they're only 16!! The characters are trying their best to save Kakeru given the circumstances and to me, that's really commendable. The characters are portrayed really well and all of them are likable.
What I don't like:
The thing with great mangas is that sometimes it takes time for new chapter to come out, which is okay but I really want to know what happens next >.< Other than that, there's nothing that I don't like xD

This manga is a must read, even to those who usually don't read shoujo manga :)

Tell me what you think in the comments :)
