hoozuki no reitetsu - Eguchi Natsumi

Status: Ongoing
Genre: seinen, fantasy, comedy

According to Japanese belief, Hell is divided into 16: 8 "hot hells" and 8 "cold hells". These are further divided into many sub-levels. Since Hell is a very big and complicated place, it is very difficult to govern and manage. Fortunately, Enma (King of Hell) has a very capable and hardworking aide, the demon Hoozuki. Follow Hoozuki as he manages and solves the myriads of problems that occur in Hell.

Characters

Hoozuki
A top-ranked demon and aide of Enma. He has a very serious and straightforward personality which sometimes hurt other people (particularly Enma and Hakutaku).  He breeds and raises goldfish weed as a hobby. He really hates it when someone says he looks like Hakutaku.

Enma (Yama)
The King of Hell. Despite being a King, he appears to be quite laid back and likes to delegate difficult matters to Hoozuki. He gets slightly hurt when seeing that people respect Hoozuki more than him.

Hakutaku
A celestial being who works in Shangri-La. Is an expert in Chinese medicine. Likes to hit on women but has no luck with them. Hoozuki and Hakutaku mutually despises each other, but according to other characters's observation, they actually resemble each other.

Portrayal of Hell

Following the Japanese concept of Hell, Hell is a place to punish and torture sinners after they receive divine judgment afterlife. Therefore, Hell is divided into many levels according to the sins and severity of the sins. Demons and other Hell denizens are assigned jobs to punish the sinners and manage evil spirits that dwell in Hell.

Despite being a scary place, in this series Hell is depicted as a somewhat "normal" (??) place, with government offices, shopping districts, etc. Young demons are trained before they can become regular Hell wardens (aka torturers, lol). The Japanese Hell also works together with Chinese, Indian, and Western Hell, and sometimes officials from other hells come to Japanese hell to visit.

What I like:
  • The manga is so funny!! I can't stop laughing!! The jokes are clever and right in place. However, you'll need some knowledge on Japanese life and pop culture to understand some of the jokes.
  • The most cheerful portrayal of Hell I've ever seen. Even though it's still a scary place for the sinners, lol.
  • Adorable characters, like Shiro the Dog and young demons Karauri and Nasubi
What I Don't Like
I laugh too much I forget if there's something I don't like about this manga xD

If you like comedy or just want something you can laugh about, then this manga is for you :D
